It’s been hot here in the northeast with temperatures expected to be in the triple digits for the next three days. We’ve been running the air conditioning a lot and last night the power went out — undoubtedly because everyone else in the area is doing exactly the same thing.

This turned out to be the perfect chance to test the new Light-O-Matic app ($0.99, App Store) exclusively for iPhone 4.

Previous iPhone “flashlight” apps were pretty pathetic, simply turning the screen white, with some silly other features grafted on. I mean come on, you can do the same thing by opening the Mail app.

Light-O-Matic is actually quite useful because it uses the LED flash on the rear of the iPhone 4 as the flashlight — not the screen. And last night I was able to find my way to the bedroom because of it. The app has several other features too (strobe, safety mode, morse code), but let’s face it, you want it for the flashlight.

There’s an interesting backstory. Apple originally denied flashlight appsthat used the LED on the new i4 for ”inappropriate use of hardware”

Apple blocked all the LED flash light apps because they did not expect developers to by pass the camera feed and just use the lights. Battery drain was also another major concern. So, they met up and discussed it and decided to let them through, but all devs had to add a disclaimer to their iTunes Store description about battery drain.

Apple finally relented allowing apps to use it with one proviso: developers must include a disclaimer that continued use of the iPhone’s LED may dramatically decrease battery life. Well, duh.

Doing things is much simpler when you have both hands free, especially in the dark. Customization is to produce the best and most suitable products to meet different needs. Since street lamps are used in different environments, needs vary widely depending on time, place and weather. Intelligent Control System is Another Advantage over Traditional Street Lamps
Unlike conventional light sources, in terms of some features, LED is an electronic component which can be intelligent-controlled via IC. Current LED intelligent control system can perform stepless control of LED brightness based on road conditions so as to extend the service life of the LED street lamp and save energy. For example, the LED street lamp intelligent control system invented by Institute of Computing Technology, Chinese Academy of Science, is composed of following intelligent control devices: motion image sensor components to detect moving objects on the road and transmit the result to the microprocessor, which receives the detection result, generate control orders of programmed lighting time and transmit them to the switch control, which keeps the specified LED lamp on for programmed time length. The intelligent control devices also include communication components like a sender and a receiver. Moreover, the motion image sensor components can detect the moving direction of a moving object, which in turn is sent to the microprocessor to light up the LED street lamp right in the direction in advance.
In future, the ultimate development of the intelligent control system may realize not only the automatic adaption of the brightness, color and angle of the LED street lamp based on different environments, but also the real-time monitoring of the lamp use in order to achieve optimization under intelligent control.

The show didn't focus on sign-related products. I saw only five companies that exhibited custom-made neon, cold-cathode or fluorescent tubing, and I saw two, high-resolution, LED videoboards. A Dutch-Chinese company displayed LED, which it called

LED products incorporated red, green and blue LEDs controlled by all available protocols. Sold under neon-like tradenames, these products were offered by Dutch Chinese, French Chinese, British Chinese, German Chinese, Spanish Chinese, Taiwanese Chinese and, finally, Chinese companies. Show organizers and exhibitors should consider adding Chinese to future show languages, in addition to English, German and Italian.

Even companies that traditionally focused on special incandescent lamps and stage-lighting lamps showed only LEDs (with poor color rendering, in my opinion).

I spoke to scientists from LED manufacturers Nichia and Osram Sylvania about their most recent efficiency data. Nichia's white LEDs reach 41 to 42 lumen per watt (compare this to 80 lm/W for cold cathode and 105 to 125 lm/W for fluorescents), while their blue LEDs achieve 10 lm/W and their amber LEDs reach 23 lm/W – which equals a tungsten-halogen lamp.

Osram's research scientist claimed that the company's red LEDs have achieved approximately 70 lm/W. I'd believe this extremely high figure only if I could measure it myself or confirm it in writing. The company's data sheets don't provide efficiency data.

The show focused on networking and "smart" lamp power supplies that can be controlled by Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM) phone systems, wireless LAN, USB or via the Internet. All big, fluorescent-lamp companies exhibited "long-life" tubes, with an average lifetime of approximately 20,000 to 30,000 hours, which had been offered before only by a few, small manufacturers. The long-life tubes would be helpful for hard-to-reach sign applications where neon or cold cathode may not be permitted.
